Note: Herkimer diamonds are not true diamonds, but exceptionally clear quartz crystals found in Herkimer County, New York, and the surrounding Mohawk River Valley. Their water-clear transparency and natural geometric facets give them the appearance of genuine diamonds. Scientifically, they are double-terminated quartz crystals. Strictly speaking, “Herkimer diamond” is a geographic trade name for naturally faceted crystals found in and around Herkimer County.
